C-USA Basketball Power Rankings:
1. Middle Tennessee (20-5, 12-1 C-USA) – Last Week #1
MTSU has won 7 straight and 12 of their last 13. They are getting everyone’s best shot every night and they keep finding ways to win. The emergence of Antwain Johnson has proved to come at a timely part of the season as he has scored in double figures in 4 straight games. They’ll need him to continue that play into the conference tournament.
2. Western Kentucky (18-7, 10-2 C-USA) – Last Week #2
I still think this is the most talented team in the conference but they haven’t really looked like the dominating team they were to start the conference season as of late. They’ll need to tighten things up and hope Johnson and Coleby continue their stellar play as matchups with ODU and MTSU still loom in a couple weeks. For now, they take a Texas road right to a sneaky good UNT team and Rice.
3. Old Dominion (19-5, 10-2 C-USA) – Last Week #3
ODU is as experienced as they come with their starting five consisting of three juniors and two seniors. That experience will come in handy as the season winds down. Only a game and a half back of MTSU, the Monarchs cannot afford a slip up this week when they play host to red hot UTSA and not so hot, UTEP.
4. Marshall (17-8, 8-4 C-USA) – Last Week #4
The Thundering Herd have won three straight after a two game losing streak. Marshall has three legitmate all C-USA players right now in Elmore, Burks and Penava. With six games remaining the Herd claim the number four spot and a bye in the conference tournament at the moment.
5. North Texas (14-11, 7-5 C-USA) – Last Week #6
Grant McCasland has to be a front runner in the coach of the year race. The job he has done with this team has been incredible. Picked to finish 11th in the preseason rankings by the coaches, the Mean Green are in position to earn a first round bye. Roosevelt Smart is playing some of the best ball in conference as well, averaging 21.5 PPG and 4.6 RPG.
6. UAB (16-10, 7-6 C-USA) – Last Week #5
UAB got a much needed win over Rice in a game that the Owls led by 10 with under four minutes to go. The Blazers have been struggling big time over the course of the past month going 3-5 in their last eight games.
7. UTSA (14-11, 7-5 C-USA) – Last Week #9
The Roadrunners might be one of the hottest teams in the conference right now having won four straight games against some good opponents (Marshall, WKU, UAB and UTEP). They hit the road against ODU tomorrow that will be a big test due to the different styles of play. Can UTSA pull it off?
8. Louisiana Tech (15-11, 6-7 C-USA) – Last Week #7
The Bulldogs have lost two of three after winning four straight. The road gets tougher this week with matchups against UAB and MTSU.
9. Southern Miss (13-13, 6-7 C-USA) – Last Week #8
Probably the most up and down team in conference. They have a big opportunity at home this week against MTSU and UAB. Southern Miss is 10-1 at home this season.
10. FIU (11-15, 5-8 C-USA) – Last Week #11
The Panthers were competitive in two losses last week. Looking like they like to alternate between wins and losses this year.
11. FAU (10-15, 4-9 C-USA) – Last Week #10
Losers of four straight the Owls have really struggled offensively this year. They haven’t scored more than 70 points in their past seven games.
12. Rice (5-20, 2-10 C-USA) – Last Week #13
The Owls are playing some decent ball and are putting themselves in position to win some games but can’t seem to pull it off.
13. UTEP (7-17, 2-10 C-USA) – Last Week #12
The Miners have lost 6 straight and now hit the road for games at Charlotte and ODU. UTEP has yet to win a road game this season and tomorrow night’s game vs Charlotte might determine if the Miners make the conference tournament. You might call it a must win game……
14. Charlotte (5-18, 1-11 C-USA) – Last Week #14
8 straight losses and things don’t seem to be getting better anytime soon.
