C-USA Basketball Power Rankings:
1. Middle Tennessee (16-5, 8-1 C-USA) – Last Week #1
MTSU took care of business last week winning both games by an average margin of 27.5 points and breaking a couple of ankles on the way. Their defense was as stout as it has been all year only allowing 50.5 PPG against UTSA and UTEP. The Blue Raiders are getting each team’s best shot, next one is for first place in C-USA at ODU. If the Blue Raiders are leaving the TED with a win, someone other than King and Potts is going to have a little breakout game.
2. Western Kentucky (15-6, 7-1 C-USA) – Last Week #2
Only one game last week and it was a tough one against a sneaky good Marshall team. The Hilltoppers ended up taking the much needed win and one of the highlights of the week. They are now set up this week for a Texas road trip to UTEP and UTSA. If the Hiltoppers want to continue to be considered for an at-large bid, they can’t have a slip up this week.
3. Old Dominion (16-4, 7-1 C-USA) – Last Week #3
The Monarchs have a chance this week at home against MTSU to remind everyone that they’re still here. Everyone that talks about C-USA mentions MTSU, WKU and UAB but no one seems to be talking about ODU. They have 4 guys scoring in double figures in conference play while having a top 15 defense in the nation. Ahmad Carver is averaging 15.9 PPG, 3.8 RPG and 6.1 APG while having a 4-1 assist-turnover ratio. For the sake of chaos, here’s to the Monarchs beating Middle tomorrow night!
4. Marshall (14-7, 5-3 C-USA) – Last Week #4
The Herd went 0-2 against Western this year and are 3-3 in their last 6 games. Their 3 losses in C-USA are against Western and ODU, which isn’t bad. They have proved to be able to beat the best teams in conference (MTSU) but now they have to be more consistent. They have a great core of players and a team definitely to watch once the tournament comes around.
5. UAB (14-8, 5-4 C-USA) – Last Week #5
Not sure what is going on in Birmingham but the Blazers have lost 3 of their last 4 and were basically beat from start to finish at home against UTSA. A lot of people including myself are kind of disappointed in the season they have had so far but with matchups against ODU, La Tech, MTSU, Marshall, and WKU still to go they’ll have their chance to put the critics to sleep. If not, Ehsan’s seat might be getting a little warm.
6. North Texas (12-10, 5-4 C-USA) – Last Week #9
THE surprise team of conference play, Grant McCasland has to be in the coach of the year discussion. Their 4 losses in conference have all been decided by a total of 13 points. They also have a guy in the POY conversation in Roosevelt Smart who is scoring 20 PPG with 4.4 RPG. The Mean Green only have one game this week against Rice.
7. Louisiana Tech (13-9, 4-5 C-USA) – Last week #7
Don’t look now but the Bulldogs have won 3 straight games and are taking the road this week against the Florida schools. La Tech is looking to get themselves back into the top half of the standings after a bad 1-5 start to conference when Jalen Harris left the program. Jacobi Boykins and DaQuan Bracey have carried the load so far but Amorie Archibald has been a nice surprise scoring in double figures the past 4 games.
8. Southern Miss (11-11, 4-5 C-USA) – Last Week #6
9-0 at home but 1-8 on the road. Bad news? Two road games this week versus FIU and FAU. Southern Miss has to do a better job on the road this week. Griffin, Magee and Edwards have been the go-to guys for this team and they’ll have to step it up to break that road skid.
9. UTSA (11-11, 4-5 C-USA) – Last Week #10
Probably the most impressive win of the week was the Roadrunners winning at UAB. They led 42-26 at haltime and made 15 three’s. Jhivvan Jackson continues to impress and proving he deserves the freshman of the year award by averaging 20.5 PPG last week versus MTSU and UAB. Henson has the program headed in the right direction.
10. FAU (9-10, 3-4 C-USA) – Last Week #8
4-2 in their last 6 games and Ronald Delph was tabbed player of the week. They host La Tech and Southern Miss this week.
11. FIU (10-13, 3-6 C-USA) – Last Week #11
The Panther continued their win one, lose two streak in conference play with losses to Rice and UNT last week.
12. UTEP (7-14, 2-7 C-USA) – Last Week #12
That opening season 100-50 win seems soooo long ago, doesn’t it? Well the Miners are home this week against WKU and Marshall. The one thing that the Miners have going for them? They followed their previous 3 game losing streak in conference with a win….
13. Rice (5-17, 2-7 C-USA) – Last Week #13
Owls are trying to win a couple and hope UTEP continues to struggle so they can make the conference tournament.
14. Charlotte (5-14, 1-7 C-USA) – Last Week #14
Six straight losses. Football players and basketball players have been clearly hanging out too much.
