“I want to come back and be the head coach”.

Bob Cantu, University of Portland’s top assistant coach, has informed us of his interest in becoming the next head basketball coach at UTEP. Cantu was an assistant coach for the Miners for three seasons from 2013-2016.

Cantu also told us, “ I have a commitment from Russell Springman to join me tonight”.

Springman is currently an assistant coach at the University of San Diego since the 2015 season but was an assistant to Rick Barnes at Texas for 14 seasons. While at Texas, Springman signed the likes of TJ Ford, Lamarcus Aldridge and Kevin Durant.

Cantu has long been considered one of the top recruiters in the nation. He was recently named the No. 1 Mid-Major Assistant Coach in the nation by Hoop Scoop (2017) while a securing the No. 10 Recruiting Class in the Nation after first full year at Portland.

“My three years at UTEP has given me the opportunity to see what’s needed and expected. My experience as a recruiter and time as a head coach will allow me to hit the ground running. We are ready to go”.
